Although it was announced last April that Fallon would take over Jay Leno’s spot, the real push came as America began to prepare for the Olympics. It was Leno who suggested that his replacement’s start date be moved up a week, from February 24 to February 17, so the Olympics could be used as a springboard. There were nearly 2,200 broadcast mentions of Fallon taking over the Tonight Show during the Olympics, most of which was positive buzz about the impeccable timing.
