Gift Giving, The Media, and Valentine’s Day

A day of love or a day of gifts? Since I was a kid it has been instilled in me that Valentine’s Day has been about giving gifts and receiving gifts from the ones that we love – contrary to what Valentine’s Day is really about; love. My parents still to this day, even though I live away from home, send me a Valentine’s Day card with some sort of gift with it (thanks Mom). It seems that the focus on the holiday has shifted from love, to gifts that mean ‘I love you.” And, as always, the media reveals to us what gift categories earned the greatest share of voice.
